Boris Johnson involved in minor crash after protester incident

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s motorcade has been involved in a minor crash after a protester leapt in front of his armoured car outside the Palace of Westminster.

Key points:

  • A protester ran in front of a car containing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, causing an accident
  • The man was later arrested by police and Mr Johnson was not hurt
  • The British PM’s plane is also getting a facelift that is costing 900,000GBP

Downing Street said no-one was hurt in the incident on Tuesday afternoon which left a large dent in the boot of the armoured Jaguar Mr Johnson was travelling in.

The convoy was leaving through the gates of the Houses of Parliament and was en route to Downing Street when the protester jumped in front of the Jaguar which came to an abrupt stop — before a Range Rover carrying a police security team in it — rammed the rear of the Jaguar.

Both vehicles moved off in a matter of seconds as nearby police grappled with the protester on the road.

Union Jack makeover for Johnson’s jet to cost $1.63m

On Tuesday it was also revealed a Royal Air Force jet used by the Prime Minister and Royal Family for overseas trips is undergoing a 900,000GBP ($A1.63m) makeover to include the Union Jack flag on the tail of the aircraft.

The RAF Voyager jet, an Airbus A330 MRTT, is a dual-purpose aircraft that also operates as an-to-air refueller for other RAF jets.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman confirmed the cost and that the aircraft was in Cambridgeshire for the “pre-planned repainting”.

“This will mean that the plane can better represent the UK around the world with national branding, similar to many other leaders’ planes, while also retaining its military air-to-air refuelling capability.”

In 2018 when Mr Johnson was foreign secretary, he said he would like a “Brexit plane” to help him travel the globe and help promote the government’s global Britain vision.

Opposition parties questioned spending almost a million pounds on the makeover at a time when COVID19 was playing havoc with the economy.

Louise Haigh, Labour’s Northern Ireland policy chief, said people would question the cost when “families across the country are worried about their jobs, health and the education of their children”.

From the Liberal Democrats, Layla Moran, who is running to become leader of the party, described the decision as “a colossal waste of taxpayers’ money”.
