Queen of England Responds To Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Stepping Back: ‘My Family and I Are Entirely Supportive’

Queen Elizabeth II is okay with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping back from the royal family. The monarch issued a statement on Monday that explains a period of transition that will allow Harry and Meghan to design a life without the aid of British public funding.

The statement admits the royal family “preferred” the couple would remain in their positions, but responded with respect.

“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the statement read.

It continued. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

The rest of the statement detailed the transitional period, which will see Meghan and Harry splitting time between Canada and the U.K.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK,” the statement explained.

The statement concluded by saying that more details must be ironed out in how the Royal Family will move forward.

Meghan and Harry announced their decision to work toward financial independence in a lengthy joint statement on Wednesday.

The statement, which was published on all of the couple’s social media accounts, said the pair intends to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

It continued: “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

The statement from the couple added that the Sussexes will raise their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, with respect of royal traditions, and independent life. They also revealed a new charity organization that has not yet launched.

The statement caught many fans of the royal family by surprise along with the queen, Harry’s father Prince Charles and his brother Prince William. Shortly after Meghan and Harry’s announcement, the office of the Queen issued a short response.

“Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage,” it read when published Wednesday. “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
