Timothée Chalamet is taking the lead role of Bob Dylan in the upcoming music biopic, Going Electric. Helmed by Ford v. Ferrari director James Mangold, the film will be produced by the musician’s longtime manager Jeff Rosen and written by Jay Cocks, with Dylan himself closely working with both Mangold and Searchlight Pictures.

Going Electric will focus on Dylan’s controversial decision to switch from an acoustic to an electric guitar in the mid ’60s — starting with his performance at the Newport Music Festival where he played using an electric guitar amplifier for the first time. He’s since then become a figure in both folk and rock music, with some sneering at Dylan’s choice to “abandon” folk and some supportive of his path down the latter.

The music rights to Dylan’s extensive discography will be included in production and sources claim that Chalamet is currently taking guitar lessons for the role. Filming will begin once the Call Me By Your Name and The King actor finishes a stage play in London this Spring 2020.

Dylan released the compilation album Travelin’ Thru, 1967-1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 in November 2019 and is gearing up for a 14-date tour in Tokyo, Japan this April. Meanwhile, Chalamet is prepping to make his London theater stage debut in April for 4000 Miles, along with the premiere of Denis Villeneuve‘s adaptation of Dune and Wes Anderson‘s The French Dispatch.
