Hillary Clinton Supports Meghan Markle Over ‘Inexplicable’ Treatment in British Tabloids

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has showed her support for “gutsy” Meghan Markle, calling out the “inexplicable” treatment of the Duchess of Sussex in the British press.

Earlier this month, Prince Harry announced that he and Markle had begun proceedings against the publisher of the Mail on Sunday newspaper for publishing details of a private letter the duchess sent to her father, Thomas Markle, last year. Harry accused some of the British press of a “relentless” campaign of “knowingly false and malicious” about his wife that had been “painful” to witness.

In an interview with The Sunday Times published Sunday, Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton expressed their support for Markle, who they both agreed was “gutsy—”which is the premise of their new co-authored book, The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience.

“I do want to say that the way she’s been treated is inexplicable,” said Hillary Clinton of Markle.

“If the explanation is that she’s biracial, then shame on everybody,” the former U.S. secretary of state said.

Chelsea Clinton praised Markle for continuing to use her royal platform to support causes that are close to her, such as empowering women.

“She proudly had a career first and has a voice that she thankfully continues to use. Anyone who has the temerity to break the mold of what has previously been established and expected often, unfortunately, receives criticism and bile that I don’t understand. We’ve seen this pattern repeatedly,” said Chelsea Clinton.

Why Meghan Markle is suing the Mail on Sunday

On October 1, Prince Harry announced that he and Markle had filed a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers for breaching the U.K.’s Data Protection Act and misuse of private information after the Mail on Sunday published excerpts from a private letter Markle wrote to her father last year.

In February, the British newspaper published parts of Markle’s letter, written to Thomas Markle last August, just three months after her and Harry’s wedding. Thomas Markle was notoriously absent from the wedding amid speculation of a rift between them. In the lead-up to the wedding, Markle admitted staging paparazzi photographs for money.

In a statement, Harry said Markle had become “one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.”
